About Plant Based Protein Blends

Plant Protein Blends are a combination protein blend which combine natural plant-based proteins (usually Pea and Rice).

Rice Protein is great to include in Plant Based Protein Blends as it’s high in protein and low in fats and carbohydrates. It also has high levels of Alanine, Arginine, Glutamic Acid and Tyrosine.

Plant Based Protein Blends often include free Pea Protein due to it being high in protein and low in carbohydrates as well as containing high levels of Serine and Tryptophan.

What’s the different between plant based protein and animal protein?

The main differences between plant based proteins and animal proteins is the lower protein content as well as lower levels of Leucine and Essential Amino Acids (EAAs). Animal proteins are closer to our own proteins in our body and are readily used at a faster rate.

A Plant Based Protein Blend however produces a more complete protein sources and a more compelling alternative to animal proteins. Plant Based Protein Blends have a more balanced spectrum of amino acid and can be comparable with a Whey Protein regarding muscle growth and recovery.

How do Plant Based Protein Blends compare in taste?

Plant Based Protein Blend aren’t as creamy as a Whey Protein but over the last decade taste and texture have improved as the products become more of a mainstream adoption.

Rice Proteins can often be hard and gritty, while Pea Proteins help improving smoothen the blend improving the texture.

Natural sweeteners are usually added to protein blends as they can help counteract the bitterness sometimes found in other Plant Based Proteins Blends.

Other reasons to make the switch to Plant Based Protein Blend?

Rice and Pea Protein Blends contain no animal products and are generally free from soy and lactose. This makes a Plant Based Protein Blends perfect for vegetarians and vegans or those who are sensitive to lactose as they’re virtually allergy free.

Plant Based Protein Blends can be a more sustainably option, as to produce them uses far less CO2, less land and less water when compared with producing animal proteins.

Some people also choose Plant Based Protein Blends due to ethical reasons.

Plant Based Protein Blend FAQs

What are Plant Based Proteins?

Plant Based Proteins are proteins made from purifying and refining the protein which comes from plants. Pea, Rice, Soy, Mung Bean and Hemp are just examples of these.

These are generally extracted using water, heat and filtration… with the liquid matter then dried and further refined. The resulting powdered protein product usually has a protein content of between 50 to 90% pure protein.

Why are Plant Based Proteins better?

Plant Based Proteins are better for people who have digestive issues with dairy, as well as vegans who don’t want to consume any animal matter.

Plant Based Proteins are arguably better for the environment as they take less land to grow and use less resources in the refinement process. This results in Plant Based Proteins generally being accepted as having a smaller carbon footprint.

Are Plant Based Proteins as good as Dairy Protein at building muscle?

This question is still somewhat debated, but the consensus is that Plant Based Proteins are not as good as Dairy Proteins at building muscle. Dairy proteins have a better spread of amino acids, a higher PCDAA score with greater bioavailability.

Most importantly to many people, dairy proteins taste better, they are more reminiscent of a milk shake – as they originate from milk.

The good news is that many studies which compared plant based proteins to whey concluded plant based proteins simply require a larger dose. Once the dose is increased (and key BCAA levels are reached), Plant Based Proteins are just as effective.

Are Plant Based Proteins lactose free?

Lactose is a carbohydrate (sugar) found in diary, Plant Based Proteins are 100% lactose free. This makes them a great option for those following a lactose free diet.

Do plant based proteins contain fat?

Yes, but this varier a lot depending on the plant source.

Rice and Soy Proteins are very low in fat; however Pea Protein contains around 5 to 6% fat.

Do plant based proteins contain cholesterol?

Proteins derived from Pea, Soy, Rice and Hemp do not contain any cholesterol.

Earth Protein – Vegan Protein Reviews

Best value vegan protein

Posted by Nathalie on March 21, 2020

This is a great vegan protein, both in taste and texture. The salted caramel is absolutely delish. It mixes well and isn’t chalky at all unlike other vegan proteins. It is also the best-value product on the market!

Taste/consistency/mix ability

Posted by Jordan on January 25, 2020

Better than many vegan proteins I’ve had, the salted caramel is okay I prefer vanilla, but it tastes like pancake mix in how gritty it is but it isn’t a bad thing to me and even works really well as making pancakes. Got to say I am impressed! NOTE I’ve always had whey proteins, and this plant based on has completely eliminated protein Farts and I’m guessing it’s because of a minor digestibility issue I didn’t know I had.

Earth Protein - like chalk

Posted by Chantelle on January 24, 2020

very disappointed to receive the vanilla earthy protein. I expect grainy texture because it’s vegan, but this one is so chalky I can’t drink it – which is made worse because I purchased two bags! The vanilla flavour is non existent, it’s just plain power with a sweetener aftertaste. a smoothie with fruit doesn’t even make it better

Good but weird taste

Posted by Alec G on January 14, 2020

This product is pretty awesome! I went plant based at the start of the year and this being ‘vegan friendly’ (I’m not vegan, no ethical dilemmas here) means I can smash 3/4 a day and still perform. Only thing, which isn’t the biggest of issues, is the texture. It’s not like whey protein, it’s more inline with what I imagine powdered rice and peas would taste

Best vegan protein I’ve tried!!! (Salted Caramel)

Posted by Chloe on December 21, 2019

This has got to be the best tasting vegan protein I’ve ever had. It still has a bit of that funny aftertaste like most vegan proteins (and you really notice it if you’re used to WPC/WPI like I am), but I mix it with some cacao, water and/or milk and it tastes freakin delish. Will for sure be buying again.

Yum and Yum

Earth Protein

I’ve tried several plant proteins and this is by far the best. Low carbs, sugar and 80% protein content without being too chalky.

Best vegan protein

Posted by Michal Bartnikowski on November 27, 2019

Just tried the salted caramel flavour – tastes great. I think it’s the best-tasting and best-textured vegan protein I’ve had. Good stuff BN!

Tastes great and no discomfort or bloating

Posted by Ebony Barber on November 3, 2019

Love this product. Delicious and I feel lighter, no bloating and mixes well in my porridge and cereal.

Very good product. The salted caramel flavour tastes good and mixes easily.

Messy, strange taste, doesn't mix well

Posted by Marc on September 11, 2019

I gave it a shot, ordered a bag of chocolate and salted caramel. When compared to WPI, the plant based powder is very fine (tiny), like dust, it flies every where when mixing, and sits on the top of milk (doesn’t dissolve very well). It’s honestly not nice to consume, so I’ll be switching back to the regular WPI when the bags are empty.

Love it!

Posted by Nitika Mathur on September 6, 2019

I mix 300 ml of milk with 30g of chocolate earth protein, and it’s a little like having a chocolate milkshake!

It’s not intensely chocolatey, but the flavour’s definitely there. It’s also a little powdery, but I don’t mind at all.

I tried with water, and didn’t like that very much.
